Gwavas Forrest Run!

Well since I got pushed into writing the report for the Gwavas run, which was held on the 8.8.2010, here it is! Thanks Pat for helping out………….NOTJ

At the last meeting Nigel told us that he and Steve Franklin were planning a D class run in Gwavas, which would be open for people WITHOUT a winch to come and have a go, well that was the green light for me!  Since I’ve been on hard runs in Gwavas already a couple times (with the hb club) I knew I would be fine.

Ok it was said that we meet at HQ in Gwavas at 8.30am, so I got up at 11.30pm to get ready….ah no I mean to go to work! I finished at 6.45am so I had enough time to go home, have a quick shower, make my soup, some buns (all really quiet to not wake up “the” Joella and Charlie) and to pick up Floyd. As we arrived at HQ at about 8.15am there was just Pat and 3 HB club guys who unloaded their trucks from trailers. It ended up being 9am till the last truck arrived. After splitting all 18 trucks in to 2 groups with 9 trucks each (and the odd STUPID comment about me (and Pat) still not having a winch (and the fact that we shouldn't be there) we went off to do some 4wdriving! Steve was our group leader, we drove along the main forest road until we stopped and we went right hand down and pretty steep into the forest. We cut our way through that narrow and difficult track (not for Pat in his Suzuki) for a couple of min and we came out on the street again. After a quick check through the radio, we continued our way and came to a steep downhill track in an area were the forestry workers just been through pruning trees. We all went down that track and after watching Steve make a couple attempts, a steep off camber drop downhill, Graham and I looked for another way out.....  Which we found and decided to use. From there we pretty much went along a couple of different roads and did the odd detour into the forest with some challenges but no one had any problems managing those. At mid-day we came to a nice little track which went down hills into a creek which was quite narrow. We drove along the creek and came to an off camber steep climb out, apart from Stewart and Craig nobody had problems there and when we came out at the top we had lunch.  After lunch we went to do the “3 hour wait” track. Which we did the opposite way and nobody seemed to have any problems there apart from Colin who got navigated, by Wendy, onto a tree stump, so he got the high lift jack out and I tried  to pull him backwards, which didn’t work out so well so Steve came with his chainsaw and helped out once again. After we did that track we wanted to head to another one when Steve saw a little obstacle which he tried, but after a few attempts he backed out and graham decided to give it a go and he managed (thanks to v8 power) to clear it without a problem, so Colin gave it a go and after about 100 times.....
